Content

At the end of the 20th century, a large number of states democratised. This global wave of democratisation has been the issue of numerous academic discussions. The results of these various analyses, however, have only vaguely explained the true forces behind the political developments in (South) East Asia. In this paper, the common and indigenous causes of democratisation in the region's five new democracies, South Korea, Taiwan, Mongolia, Thailand and the Philippines, will be pinpointed. Moreover, current obstacles to the consolidation of (South) East Asia's democratic achievements will be examined.
