Abstract

This book aims to study the dynamic relationships between regime
democratization and intra-party democratization. Reviewing the cases of Taiwan (the Kuomintang, the Democratic Progressive Party) and Hong Kong (the Hong Kong Democratic Party, the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Liberal Party), it seeks to show that regime democratization propels intra-party democratization. Adopting Albert Hirschman's "voice and exit" mechanism, this book develops a contingency model to explain intra-party democratization that occurs in a wave of regime democratization.
